Segregation by Material Properties
Incompatible materials should not be stored close together. For example, acids are kept apart from alkalis, and flammable materials are kept away from heat sources and oxidising agents.
Clear Labelling
Every package needs a legible label: material name, batch number, receipt date, and the appropriate hazard symbols. Faded or damaged labels should be replaced promptly.
Area Control
- Adequate ventilation in the storage area.
- Bunding or containment trays for liquids.
- Restricted access for authorised personnel only.
- Personal protective equipment and spill response kits within easy reach.
Stock Rotation
Apply first-in first-out so materials are not held beyond their usable life. Tidy receipt and issue records support traceability and help prevent old stock building up.
