In industrial chemical procurement, two documents almost always accompany a shipment: the Certificate of Analysis (CoA) and the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). They serve different purposes and both matter.

Certificate of Analysis (CoA)

A CoA reports test results for a specific batch against agreed parameters. Key things to check:

  • Batch number — confirm it matches the packaging.
  • Parameters and results — compare against your purchase specification.
  • Production and expiry dates — relevant to your usage planning.

Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)

The MSDS carries safety information: hazard properties, required personal protective equipment, storage guidance, and steps for spill and emergency response. It should be available in the storage area and known to the staff handling the material.

Good Practice

Keep the CoA for each batch together with the goods receipt record so traceability is preserved. Make sure the MSDS you hold is the latest version from the supplier. If any parameter does not suit your process, raise it at the quotation stage so a suitable alternative can be sourced.
